Why we chose the Patagonia Macro Puff Snowboard Mid Layer: Sustainable Puff.

Brand spanking new for 2019/2020 the Patagonia Macro Puff is the big cousin of their iconic Nano and Micro Puffs. It’s a warmer, slightly bulkier version for those days you don’t really want to leave the cocoon of your duvet.

Whilst it’s probably not ideal for spring riding, this is more of a ‘dead of winter need all the help you can get’ kind of layer, and its warmth to weight ratio is insanely good. Floating off the scales at around 420g, it’s lighter than your average loaf of bread.

“The insulation even sits in offset baffles to reduce stitching, which in turn reduces the risk of losing heat.”

The boffs at Patagonia thought of everything when making this badboy- the insulation even sits in offset baffles to reduce stitching, which in turn reduces the risk of losing heat.

Although it isn’t fully waterproof, it has been coated with a water repellency to keep the weather at bay. It’s also backed up by the fact that the insulation Patagonia have used is synthetic, so it can still perform when wet. We don’t recommend you dunk it in a bath, but it would fare better than a down option if you did…

It’s longer than its family members, which makes it perfect for snowboarding as it comes down to cover your butt. Thankfully it doesn’t hit the XXXTRA steezy skier tall tee length, but it’s just enough to give that bit of extra warmth.

The front zip works 2 ways, so if you’re getting into some Xavier De Le Rue mountaineering style riding, you’ll be able to wear your harness with no issues. On the inside of the Macro Puff you get 2 full length pockets, which are the perfect size for storing your splitboard skins. Or a tinny of beer fits perfectly too just saying…

“The outer nylon is fully recycled, and Patagonia offer their ‘Worn Wear’ programme, which repairs garments no matter the warranty period”

While we’re on about the details, the hood too is helmet compatible – meaning you can adjust it to your liking. Patagonia have also used a minimal-stitching quilting construction, which both stabilises and maximises the loft of the PlumaFill fibres.

This sythenthetic, sustainable, jacket could well be a must have for many. You can store it in your backpack without nearly adding any extra weight on your back, and when the temperatures drop you can just throw it on underneath your jacket.

In terms of creating a sustainable piece, the outer nylon is fully recycled, and Patagonia offer their ‘Worn Wear’ programme, which repairs garments no matter the warranty period. Made in both men’s and women’s model, this thing comes in a range of colours to suit each and every skin tone you’ll be looking good, whilst doing good. It’s a win-win.

Trade Secrets

Natasha Woodworth – Patagonia Technical Designer

“The Women’s Macro Puff is my go-to for pretty much all high winter pursuits whether it be ski touring, alpine climbing or resort skiing. The lightweight insulation provides the most amount of warmth I would want while easily packing down tiny into my bag. We chose super soft and supple matte face fabric to complement the lightweight insulation and provide the most comfort.

“My favourite trick when winter camping is putting my freeze-dried camp dinner in here while it warms up or a hot water bottle!”

There are small design features I love; the two-way zip for harness compatibility and the longer length that provides extra warmth and coverage. It is easy to stash wet gloves, gear or snacks in the two interior drop-in pockets. My favourite trick when winter camping is putting my freeze-dried camp dinner in here while it warms up or a hot water bottle!

The Macro Puff is just one of those pieces I never have to question whether it will work for whatever mission I am planning. It is always warm enough, stays warm when wet, and packs down to nearly nothing. The fact that I can also wear it around town or out to dinner later makes it a no brainer!”
