Spektrum Östra 2021-2022 Snowboard Goggles Review

Tested and selected for our top 100 snowboard products of the year: the Spektrum Östra

  • Price: £164 / €189
  • Lens: Cylindrical
  • System: Magnetic

Why we chose the Spektrum Ostra Snowboard Goggles: We’re loving the seriously green eco-credentials on offer here, as well as the stealthy black aesthetic.

We hear a lot about recycled waterproof zips and sustainably sourced wood cores in the snowboard industry. But what about goggles? They’re a part of virtually every rider’s setup, and there’s undoubtedly a lot of plastic and other synthetic materials going into every pair. Well, then, feast your eyes on these bad boys: the Spektrum Östra Bio Premium Goggles. These are (we’re pretty sure, anyway) the most sustainably produced goggles on the market.

The frame of these goggles is produced from a plant-based plastic derived from castor oil. Along with the injected dye colour in the frame, they’re about as eco-friendly a pair of snowboard goggles (or ski goggles, depending on who’s reading…) you could strap onto your head this season.

Thankfully all the green points are backed up with a performance and fit that really delivers in the mountains. Products that are made with respect to mother nature is only half the battle, along with having something that’s as functional and reliable as it is stylish. Thankfully, the Östra goggles cover all bases.

First up, they feature Carl Zeiss Sonar lens technology. This delivers superior contrast in low light conditions, maximum clarity, and 100% UV protection. The Super-AntiFog Kyohou inner lenses, according to Spektrum at least, provide “140% better fog management than industry standard.” How you calculate 140% of fog we’ll never know, but the feedback from the test team was pretty great in this department anyway.

Frame and Straps

While for some it can feel a bit gimmicky, the magnetic lens system was a big hit among the Whitelines team, and it works super efficiently in this package. To be honest, we’re not ones for swapping out low and high light lenses in between runs on the chairlift (be honest, it’s just a bit of a faff, even for the quick change systems), but having something as easy to swap out as this takes literally seconds to sort out at the breakfast table and will have you riding the ride lens for that day’s conditions. Simple as.

Comfort is in no short supply either. The Tri-density face foam provides a plush buffer between the lens and your face, and there’s a really good amount of ventilation to keep the sweat from dripping into your eyeballs, without ever feeling like you’re riding in a wind tunnel.

Price-wise, they don’t exactly come cheap. But they’re very competitive with many other brands at this price point in terms of their functionality, features and clarity. Once you factor in the environmentally-minded design and construction, they score full marks across the board.
