Bent Metal Axtion 2020-2021 Snowboard Bindings Review

Why we chose the Bent Metal Axtion Snowboard Bindings: It’s backed by Forest Bailey AND Aristotle.

Aristotle once said “The whole is greater than the sum of its parts” and we think his concept of Holism applies quite well here. On paper you’ve got a whole mess of ratchets, buckles and moving parts (albeit premium ones) that are seemingly innocuous when they’re alone but put them together and you’ve got a world class binding capable of taking you through the gnarliest terrain on the planet. New for 2020/21 the Bent Metal Axtion are a high-performance all-mountain option built to tackle anything and everything you throw their way.

Despite being the essential interface between rider and snowboard, bindings often tend to get snubbed by those investing in their gear. Bindings drive power and channel movement from your legs to your board, and as such should be chosen carefully to match up with your riding style.

“These handy little buggers function like miniature snowboards, slotting into the chassis and sitting underfoot to seamlessly channel rider input”

Adjustability is the name of the game with the Axtion. The whole ride can be changed with a few choice tweaks, namely the interchangeable Flex Drive Plates. These handy little buggers function like miniature snowboards, slotting into the chassis and sitting underfoot to seamlessly channel rider input between boot and board. They’re even finished with an eco-sublimated topsheet, just like actual Mervin made snowboards. You can swap out your Drive Plates for softer or stiffer ones depending on your riding preferences.

Forward lean is a controversial topic in snowboarding, hang around a mountain bar long enough and you’re bound to hear a slurred debate about its merits and downfalls. Cranking up your forward lean offers more leverage and power through your turns, but it’s not for everyone. Whichever side of the argument you find yourself on, the Bent Metal Cube is without a doubt one of the best systems to change up your forward lean should you choose to. Twist the cube and off you go, easy peasy. As a bonus, the urethane Bent Metal use in its construction also act as a bit of a dampener, soaking up excess chatter.

A one-piece chassis and polymer highback offer day in, day out durability so although they won’t break the bank, they won’t break on first use either. Foam pads underfoot and down the highback give increased support and comfort for long days on the hill.

Unlike some things in life, with bindings, size does matter. The Axtion has an adjustable toe ramp to fine tune the fit, eliminating dead zones for a precise and responsive ride.

“Under the umbrella of Mervin MFG, the crew at Bent Metal are fanatical about sliding sideways and coming up with innovative ways to improve that experience”

Handcrafted in the good old US of A, Bent Metal bindings draw on 30 years of experience building and designing snowboard gear. Under the umbrella of Mervin MFG, the crew at Bent Metal are fanatical about sliding sideways and coming up with innovative ways to improve that experience.

You’re as likely to find Forest Bailey riding spines and chutes as you are handrails and stair sets in the streets. His riding style draws upon skateboarding influence for a blend of big mountain performance and tech manoeuvres. His Axtion binding has the chops to do it all, and to do it all with the style we’ve come to know and love. Lights, camera, Axtion.
