German efficiency’s a beautiful thing, never better exemplified than in Amplid’s binding range. Two bindings, two performance and price points, and any colourway you like. So long as it’s black. The Mutant is their most comfortable, powerful and highest performing option to date.

Amplid has more or less maxed out the rating scales with these bindings. The Mutant’s DNA goes beyond normal convention. It’s like Wolverine made love to a Ferrari and they unexpectedly had twins 9 months later. A carbon fibre composite base frame is coupled with a laminated carbon high-back for transmitting power instantly and absorbing some of the vibrations you’ll undoubtedly encounter when riding at their intended speed.

With a fit as precise as its performance, the Mutant has fully adjustable heel cups, highbacks and strap lengths. The injection moulded Lock-Down straps contour your boot for complete contact, without the pressure points. Although pretty much ready to ride straight out the box, they’re very much aimed at the kind of rider who wants to utilise every tweak and tinker at their disposal.

It’s still a binding with a beating heart and soul, though. Dual-density EVA foam keeps foot fatigue down and cushioning up, while pre-curved ladder straps make fastening in a breeze. Lastly, the 3-degree canted footbed allows you to ride hard all winter, without the impending doom of post-season knee replacement.

It’s not for every style of riding, but it will appeal to a select few – those who attack every turn, drop and line like it’s their last.

Tester’s Verdict

Mike BrindleyWhitelines

“These bindings paired up perfectly with Amplid’s Pentaquark to make for a powerful carving combo. Teched out and laced with all the carbon you could want, they had tonnes of control and comfort at speed, and an abundance of response in the highback, without feeling overly constricting or creating any hot spots.

Like your favourite pair of 90s trainers, these are fitted with air pockets underfoot to take the kick out of rough terrain and high speed, making them ideal for hard charging whether you’re hitting high alpine lines or trying to break a new record in a speedsuit.”
