Best Snowboard Action Cameras & Accessories 2019-2020

Chosen by the Whitelines Test Team

After first making their entrance a little more than a decade ago, Action Cameras have slowly become an essential part of snowboarding. We’ve come a long way since they first entered the market with the high prices and low-quality images, but things have taken a turn for the better in recent years.

Action cameras boomed in popularity as they allowed us to take a camera where we wouldn’t normally have done, accompanied by their shock-proofing and waterproofing. Follow cams have become the norm now, and you wouldn’t normally see someone chasing a mate holding a digital camera. The quality of action cameras might still not be perfect, but considering the size of these things, the footage can be quite mind-blowing.

From quick social media clips to shots used in movies shown on the big screen, action cameras have made it ten times easier for riders and filmers to capture epic shots without having to bring your whole camera kit with you up the hill.

This winter, there is a wealth of action cameras on offer catering for a variety of budgets and uses. Here is our selection of some of the best action cameras and their related accessories for 2019-2020.

DJI Mavic 2 Pro 2019-2020

PRICE: £1349

The Mavic 2 Pro is DJI’s flagship model and is touted to be the most powerful drone available to the public.

It’s a top of the range aerial camera, with the ability to capture 4K video and photos, it’s gimbal stabilised and has a 1-inch CMOS sensor. The CMOS Sensor has a sensing area 4 times better than the original Mavic Pro and can perform far better in low light conditions.

    DJI Mavic Air 2019-2020

    PRICE: £769/€849

The Mavic Air seems to be the hot ticket these days as an easily portable, with top class specs. Weighing just 430g, packed up it can fit into a jacket pocket, seriously it’s tiny. Despite its small size, it still manages to host 4K video recording at 30fps.

It has 8GB memory storage and is also available for microSD cards, so you’ve got options throughout. It has 7 cameras and sensors and has 20 metre object detection in the front and back. The APAS (Advanced Piloting Assistance Systems) helps you to steer clear of collisions and crashes allowing you to focus more on the content. It can reach speeds of about 42mph whilst in Sport Mode.

The remote control has a 4km range with 1080p real time transmission to your smartphone. The Quickshot Mode allows you to get super high-quality footage ‘hands free’. This is a great drone option for those who want something that is easy to transport and capture footage spontaneously.

    DJI OSMO Cam 2019-2020

    PRICE: £330

If you want to capture your everyday riding, an action camera is pretty much a must isn’t it?

DJI’s Osmo Action Camera has got everything you’ll need from a good action camera – and a bit more. It’s got RockSteady stabilization, so capturing all the action while being in action yourself will be a piece of cake. It’s also got a dual screen. The front screen gives you the ideal selfie cam, while the back one has an extremely clear and responsive display.

You can also record your videos in HDR. The HDR setting makes the transition between light and dark more natural, while also capturing the details nicely (something that can usually be a bit tricky in more complex light environments).

As nice additions, you can also do anything from slow-motion videos to timelapses too.

    Insta360 2019-2020

    PRICE: £210 / €230 / $200

Yeah, we get it – we also hate those frustrating 360 videos on Facebook that force you to pan your phone around to reveal more of the footage. But hear us out, this nifty action cam is so much more than just a 360 action camera – it allows you to capture the full 360 view around you – just record and go.

With this ‘shoot now, frame later’ approach, there’s no need to worry about missing any of the action whilst you’re recording – just switch this baby on and it’ll capture the full 360 degree view around you – meaning you can find and select the best angles and subject matter, later on, when you come to edit the footage.

This editing can be done via a desktop or mobile app. We found the mobile app to be the most hassle-free way of editing this footage – just make sure you’ve got yourself a modern smartphone. It’ll have no problem editing the 360 clips into 1080p video files.

The stabilisation on the Insta 360 One X is sick. Insta 360 call it ‘FlowState Stabilization’. Whilst I’m not going to claim it’ll work better than a trusty gimbal, it does a good enough job of smoothing out the enviable chatter when you’re charging down the piste, trying to keep up with Henry Shackleton as he hits up side hit after side hit.
