Why We Chose The Spy Monolith 50/50 Sunglasses: Goggles? Where we’re going, we don’t need goggles…

Spy is one of the leading names in snowboard goggles, as you’ll see if you take a wander over to that section of the Whitelines 100. Like most gogg-floggers, though, it also does a fine line in sunglasses. After all, the principles are essentially the same; comfort and style, but above all, optics.

“The single-piece design of the Spy Monolith 50/50’s lens is immediately reminiscent of freestyle pioneers like Bert Lamar”

The Spy Monolith 50/50 (along with its full framed sibling, the Monolith) is relatively new to the range, offering riders a previously unavailable style option we’re going to call ‘retro-alien’.

Who Are the Spy Monolith 50/50 sunglasses For?

All snowboarders should have a good pair of sunnies on hand, for the times when they’re preferable to goggles. We’re thinking not just of splitboard ascents, but also late-season park sessions when it’s all about hiking a rail line or pipe. With the Monolith, you won’t have to then re-goggle for the way down; just ride in these!

Lens

We’ll start with the shape; the single-piece design of the Spy Monolith 50/50’s lens is immediately reminiscent of freestyle pioneers like Bert Lamar, who pushed the boundaries of the sport in hand-dug stunt-ditches. Not a bad vibe to try and channel…

That crowd couldn’t have imagined the trajectory that halfpipe riding would take in the years between then and now – and it’s much the same with lens tech. While the Monolith 50/50 might look like an artefact, performance-wise it’s as bleeding edge as they come. The lens is ever-so-subtly tapered to suit one’s peepers, which not only provides better visuals but also prevents eye fatigue.

It’s also from Spy’s ‘Happy’ range (also found in the goggles) which are purported to not only deliver insane levels of clarity, but also improve your mood. The Spy guys take this pretty seriously, offering specific versions of it for heavy screen users, and even gamers.

Frame

Holding it all together is a chunky yet lightweight frame made from a substance called ‘Grimalid’. Tiny powder-like particles are thermo-moulded into a solid structure that punches above its weight in terms of durability. It’s also easy to make it into popping, vibrant colours. That’s something we’d normally say doesn’t really matter – but in this, a retro shape needs retro colour options! Naturally, teal and various flavours of neon can be found on the menu.

As with all 50/50 models in Spy’s locker, the frame doesn’t extend to the lower half. However, there is some rubber down there to grip your nose, which will come in especially handy if you’re going to take these out on the hill. Speaking of which, there’s also a built-in ventilation system to keep your vision clear even on sweaty spring days.

Roundup

Let’s be honest; these will not be to everyone’s taste. As one reviewer put it, these “will let everyone know you are that guy”. However, if you’re prepared to be bold on the hill and tip the hat to the trailblazers of yesteryear, the Monolith 50/50 ticks both boxes.

None of that would matter if it didn’t also deliver epic visuals – but it does. Hooray!

Pros:

  • Spy’s lens tech is hard to beat – the clarity on offer is next-level
  • When you’d rather ride in sunnies than goggles, these will serve you a lot better than the usual fashion fare

Cons:

  • We’re not sure we’ve ever seen a more Marmite design. 50/50 indeed.
