12 Best GoPro Accessories 2015-2016

Enhance your action camera footage with these top GoPro accessories, reviewed by the Whitelines Team

Of course, there are other action cameras on the market – and we look forward as always to trying out the latest releases this winter – but the GoPro continues to reign supreme. Those who’ve done their homework on how to use a GoPro properly have been able to create truly memorable footage.

So dominant is the little cuboid’s share of the market that a large number of companies now sell GoPro-specific accessories that are compatible with its unique case design. They vary wildly in application, ranging from the everyday (poles, battery packs) to the more specialist (timelapse stand, hot shoe mount). All have their uses, and are there to enhance the already formidable power of the GoPro wherever possible.

Whether you’re serious about your footage, or just looking to jazz up your holiday vids, the wealth of accessories out there are well worth a look. Here are a few of the best ones on offer for this coming winter:

SP Gadgets 39″ Remote Pole

While everyone and their Nan might have got extendible selfie sticks for Christmas last year, if you’re hoping to keep hold of your GoPro on the hill you’re going to need something made of stronger stuff.

The SP Gadgets Remote Pole shown here is the natural evolution of GoPro poles. It’s extendible up to 39 inches, and compatible with SP’s Phone Mount and Bluetooth Remote. You can also easily use GoPro’s Smart Remote thanks to an interchangeable adapter at the top of the handgrip.

The 360-degree rotatable head feels solid too, and locks in place as you tighten the tilting mechanism, giving you almost unlimited options for angles. And with a comfortable grip and adjustable wrist strap it’s highly unlikely to leave your hand in a hurry, even if you take a tumble.

SP Gadgets Powerbar Duo

On extended days out, or when you’re taking a trip to somewhere more remote, power sources can be an invaluable tool – and the SP Gadgets Powerbar Duo more than provides, with two slots for GoPro Hero3/3+ batteries and a USB charging port.

You can charge up to three GoPro batteries at one time from the mains (two in the battery slots, one via USB), so combine it with some hefty memory cards and you’ve got what you need for all-day filming.

You can also use it to recharge your phone – or any other handheld device – so even if you’re not a GoPro user this small and lightweight gadget will be a good use of pocket space.

SP Gadgets POV Elite Case

This one’s pretty self-explanatory; SP Gadgets have long been providing high quality cases for all your GoPro needs, and this Elite edition is sure to serve you just as well as its predecessors.

Whether you’re looking for something to help you organise all the little extras, or to offer additional protection from the elements, the benefits of pre-cut foam that is specific to GoPro are obvious.

With slots and pockets for your grip, flash, remote, spare batteries, cables, SD cards and more, this medium-sized option strikes a perfect balance for most users.

SP Gadgets Tripod Grip

This grip/tripod combo could well be a winner if you’re after something versatile to stick in your pocket. Doubling up in function, the tacky rubber grip splits into three short legs when you want to set it down for a steadier shot.

The legs are held together magnetically when you’re using it in grip mode, and then pop open to form a sturdy stand. The tripod is most stable when fully extended, but also holds its shape under reasonable pressure when the legs are split in an uneven formation, thanks to the angled rubber feet; and with a 360-degree ball head, it’s easy to find the perfect angle.

SP Gadgets Hot Shoe Mount

Adaptors and mounts don’t always look like much, but they can help open creative doorways. So it is with SP’s Hot Shoe Mount – a simple little accessory that allows you to take gadgets that have the GoPro mounting system, and use them atop your standard SLR camera.

You might, for example, want to use your SP Gadgets POV light (see below) with your standard camera; or get the view of your own face as you followcam with a DSLR, by rigging your GoPro on top.

Whatever elaborate plan you come up with, this bit of kit provides the missing link.

SP Gadgets Phone Mount

It’s all about interconnectability nowadays innit? The phone and the action camera are closer than ever, and if you’ve got both, you won’t regret being able to hook them up to the same accessories.

Here’s something that solves the problem of framing your shot with a screen-less GoPro. The SP Gadgets Phone Mount lets you use your phone as a display on their Remote Pole – and should your GoPro run out of juice you can keep filming with your phone by sticking it on the end of the pole. Handy.

SP Gadgets POV Light

Modern action cameras are pretty adept to darker conditions, but shining a bit of light on some situations is always a helpful option – especially when that light comes in as rugged a format as the action camera itself.

The SP Gadgets POV light comes in a waterproof sturdy shell, and is designed to be fully compatible for all your GoPro needs – with a bracket on top that your camera can attach to, as well as GoPro mounting options underneath.

The LED light itself has four brightness settings, from 60 to 300 lumen, as well as flashing and SOS settings should you ever need them – and it throws a wide-angle oval shaped light on your chosen scene.

GoPro Smart Remote

GoPro’s Smart Remote is another undoubtedly functional add-on for your camera. Compatible with GoPro Hero3 and newer, you can control up to 50 cameras using just this small device – and the LCD display helps by displaying what settings are going on on the camera itself.

You can operate it from a range of up to180 metres, but it’s equally handy when your camera is close by; you can trigger video, photo and settings without having to change angles, or remove it from the mount.

Wearable, durable and waterproof, getting one of these is a bit of a no-brainer for any GoPro user.

GoPro LCD Touch BacPac Screen

If you’re out and about using the GoPro Hero4 Black, Hero3 or 3+, an additional display is inevitably going to come in handy.

Tackling the frequently uttered complaints about original GoPro designs, the GoPro LCD Touch BacPac allows you to see exactly what you’re shooting, as well as making settings changes and playback super easy thanks to the touchscreen menu. As an added bonus, the screen includes built in speakers and a 3.5mm headphone jack too.

With multiple interchangeable case backdoors, you can switch between Skeleton, Touchscreen and Standard casing depending on your waterproofing needs – and only the Standard casing reduces its touchscreen capabilities.

GoPole Grenade Grip

GoPro grips don’t come much simpler than the GoPole Grenade Grip, so if you’re looking for a super-compact option to shove in your pocket, you’re in the right place.

The tacky rubber handle is directly fitted to your GoPro with the standard tilt-able head, and a ¼” insert on the bottom links to a removable, adjustable wrist strap. They’ve even included a handy karabiner, so you can clip it for a bit of added security.

And in case you’re thinking that there’s not too much you can do with a tool so simple, know that the Grenade Grip is a regularly used weapon in self-shooting expert Tim Humphrey’s arsenal.

GoPole Scenelapse

The GoPole Scenelapse device is a simple but highly effective way of creating panning time-lapse shots using your GoPro. Spicing up your edits with a park overview or a sunset is easy with this thing.

Technology-wise it seems to be about as complicated as an egg-timer, but don’t let that put you off. The clips it produces are as smooth as they come – with clear markers for 90°(15 min), 180°(30 min), 270°(45 min) and 360° (60 min) rotations. The only limitation is that the unit only rotates in one direction (anti-clockwise).

If you’re wondering whether you can use other devices as well as your GoPro with this, you can rest easy as the GoPro mount twists off to reveal the standard ¼” screw on top of the device. And connecting to a tripod is a doddle with the ¼” insert on the underside.

DaKine GoPro Backpack Plug

The DaKine GoPro Backpack Plug does exactly what it says on the tin.

A 10cm wide sturdy mount and Velcro strap offer an easy means of attaching your GoPro directly to the shoulder straps of your backpack, or anything similar.

Studded plastic on the back of the plate helps to keep it in place, and the mount attaches directly to GoPro’s standard locking clip – saving the need for an additional chest mounted harness.
