On December 31, 2009, Kevin Pearce caught his toe-edge while attempting a cab double cork and faceplanted into the flat bottom of an icy 22 ft Park City superpipe. The crash left him in a coma, in critical condition and with a serious traumatic brain injury.
Over three years on and Kevin is still suffering some of the effects of that injury and will never be able to snowboard at the level he once could. Today his energy and focus is being channelled into educating people about his ordeal and how people can deal with similar injuries.
‘The Crash Reel’ is a film that has been put together to document Kevin’s injury and road to recovery and while in Australia spreading the word, Kevin sat down with ABC Radio National to talk about the film and his life before and after the accident.
The interview also features the first footage we’ve seen of that fateful crash on New Years Eve 2009, as well as some rather graphic scenes of the immediate aftermath – it’s a sobering but very real reminder of just how dangerous our sport can be.
Thankfully, it’s not all doom and gloom the film looks to be a proper inspiring tale of a guy who went from having it all to almost having nothing, but who has managed to claw his life back together – and all with a massive grin on his face.
We were lucky enough to meet Kevin at the Air and Style earlier this year and can vouch for him being one of the most positive, enthusiastic and high-on-life dudes that we have ever met. Keep on being rad KP!
