Airboarders – Or the Sorry History of Every Action Sport that Comes of Age…

We stumbled across this genius “trailer” (from Bath Boys Comedy) in a lunchtime wander through the boardsports-related blogs of the interwebs. It’s for a film (which we wish someone would actually make) about the sorry history of a sport called AirBoarding.

Discovered almost by accident by three Californian friends, the “sport” turns them into global superstars complete with corporate sponsorship deals and raging drug habits.

This is obviously ripping it out of stupid action “sports” (fingerboarding anyone?) and Hollywood-ised versions of skate and surf stories (specifically Lords of Dogtown). But we couldn’t help thinking it could be equally apply as a piss-take of the development of snowboarding too.

You’ve got the firey originator who gets swept up in the hype (Tom Sims perhaps?) the businessman who buys in early having realised the sport’s potential and makes it massive (Jake Burton?) and the mellow dude who’s “just in it for the love”, resists the creeping commercialisation and never ends up making much money (Terry Kidwell? Shawn Farmer?)

What do you reckon? Is this massively wide of the mark? Or is commercialisation an inevitable consequence of discovering something super-fun…

Incidentally, someone did actually try and start a sport called AirBoarding a few years back. It actually looked way less fun than holding a business card out the window of a car…
