Slice ‘n’ Dice | Volume 6

The Kings of Carving are back at it

What do you get when you mix ballet, knife throwing, surfing and high jump? Normally just a soggy tutu and a bit of motion sickness. But somehow the Slice ‘n’ Dice lads seem to combine all these things to produce incredible snowboard movies. The crew have been dedicated to producing these chronicles of carve over the last few years, travelling all over the world in pursuit of the elusive perfect turn. This episode finds them in stripping it back to basics in Samoëns, France.

If you hadn’t already noticed carving is back in a big way. It’s no longer just the pastime of weird old dudes in lycra and hard boots. Locking in and digging trenches on corduroy is truly one of the best feelings you can get on a snowboard. Life on the edge is cool again and it doesn’t really get any cooler than this.

Watching Dave Crozier and Lewis Sonvico going at it like two flamenco dancers, so in sync with each other’s movement, it’s weirdly a little bit erotic. Kind of like fancying your cousin, you know you shouldn’t but you still sneak a peek. The casual elegance of their turns mixed with the element of danger that comes with going mach 10 with sharp edges near faces leaves you feeling a bit hypnotised by it all.

A semi-official statement from Slice HQ revealed that the boys drew inspiration from long distance runners and had special chest dressings made to stop their nipples chafing whilst they’re getting into their super low eurocarves. Apparently Tyler Chorlton has also requested a bespoke pair be made.

Did the carving revolution happen because of series like this and Korua’s ‘Yearning for Turning’, or did these series come about because of the eruption of carving fans in recent years? It’s the classic chicken and egg dilemma. Well, either way, we like chickens and we like eggs, and we really like Slice ‘n’ Dice. This instalment captures the zeitgeist of snowboarding perfectly and we’re hyped to see what the lads come up with next.
