Looking forward to Whitelines‘ 100th issue, we are feeling in a somewhat nostalgic mood. Snowboarding has undoubtedly come a long way in the last twenty years and Standard Films has been there to document it all. From the 1991 seminal classic, Totally Board, featured the likes of Shawn Farmer and Jeff Brushie and is regarded as one of the most revolutionary snowboard movies. Two decades later Standard is still going strong, having just released TB20, and is showing no signs of letting up any time soon.
Check out this fascinating retrospect by Powder and Rails at Vice Magazine. The two episodes look back over the history of Standard Films and their contribution to the snowboarding industry. Some of the archived footage is incredible and some interesting questions are asked. While high definition snowboard flicks are becoming the norm, with Brain Farm pushing the limits of film making, how much has the quality of backcountry freeriding actually progressed?
