Danny Wheeler has announced his retirement from professional snowboarding, a move that marks the end of an era for the UK scene. As this country’s first proper international pro, Danny has been at the top of the British game for so long it seems hard to remember a time when he wasn’t all over the local magazines.
Over the course of his career Danny has earned pro-models from Icon and Duotone and put down parts in some sick international films including Voice by the yankee outfit Xodus Productions and the European film Purple Yeahh. He’s also had double page spread shots in Transworld Snowboarding, no less than four full-length interviews in Whitelines and graced our cover four times. Oh, and he was voted the best UK snowboarder of all time by his riding peers and industry (see WL 83) – not bad for a kid who started out shredding dendex at Rossendale. Having cast his long shadow over the UK scene for well over a decade, this tall, unassuming figure has decided the time is right to hang up his boots and concentrate on his other great love – painting.
To mark the occasion, Danny’s long-time sponsors Westbeach have printed a limited edition T-Shirt designed by the big man himself.
Here’s his explanation of the design: “The inspiration for the artwork came from one of my favourite nights out in Vancouver at a Chinese Caberet club called the Royal Unicorn which is a favourite of the team. To celebrate the end of the season we took a bar crawl of Vancouver on BMX’ and ended up at this club. So its a homage to all the good times riding and meeting people with Westbeach in Vancouver over the years.”
We have ten of these to give away, and all you have to do to get your hands on one is answer this simple question.
