Why We Chose The Bataleon Astro: We love the clean industrial design, and they perform as well as they look.

Although Bataleon are up there with the most famous names in the board-building game, bindings are a relatively new addition to their line. Have no fear though, you’re in safe hands. In fact, by adding Bataleon’s trademark style to a two-part chassis concept borrowed from their stablemates at Rome, they’ve smashed it out of the park. The Astro is a mid-stiff workhorse aimed at powerful all-mountain dude boarding. Curious? Let’s dive in…

Who Is The Bataleon Astro For?

Core riders who don’t want to follow the Burton or Union crowd but need a versatile and powerful binder will appreciate the Astro’s unique charms.

Baseplate

Bataleon have spent decades refining the way a snowboard turns using 3D shaping, so it’s no surprise that board feel is at the heart of their binding philosophy. The Astro’s nylon base has a super compact footprint that promises not to interfere with the flex or otherwise dull the feedback from your deck. As they put it simply: ride your board, not your binding. Anyone who remembers the baseless binding experiments of the 90s, however, will know that there are limits to this admirable concept (spoiler alert: the vibrations were horrific) so Bataleon have been sure to include a dual-density footbed that cushions landings and takes care of any chatter. It’s canted two degrees to lessen the stress on your knees, and the length can be adjusted to match your boot.

An aluminium chassis is attached to this base, forming the heel hoop and sides. There are two options here: Fullwrap and Asymwrap. The Fullwrap Astro features a chassis that runs the full length on both sides for maximum energy transfer and a locked-in feel – it would be a great choice for riders who like to go hell for leather and hit monster jumps. The chassis of the Asymwrap Astro is shorter on the outside, with one less connection point, which gives you more lateral freedom. This is the one to choose if you’ve got a looser riding style that’s all about expressive turns and boned out tricks.

Straps and Highbacks

The Astro’s highback is simple and stylish. Made from a nylon composite, it’s very responsive from toe to heel, and we really dig the perforated pattern that takes the edge off the torsional flex. This is classic Bataleon design. Sure, gaps in the highback are nothing new, but how has no one else come up with such a neat solution before? The tools-free forward lean adjuster is similarly tidy, and on the inside there’s some grippy rubber to protect your boot and keep it in place.

The Infinity ankle strap is amongst the most comfortable we’ve tested. It’s pre-curved for a natural fit, with an exo spine that helps to spread the pressure across your foot. The material is super tough, too, but features large perforations throughout to keep the weight down. When you’re getting your foot in at the top of the lift, the strap stays well out of the way thanks to a clever bend in the ladders. It can also be mounted in one of two positions on either side – higher for power or lower for tweakability.

The toe strap is more-web like, made from an auxetic mesh that expands around your boot as you crank the ratchet. AuxTech (as it’s known in the trade) is fast becoming an industry standard – and for good reason. It just works. We don’t know who exactly owns the patent but they’re probably choosing the shade of leather piping on their new Ferrari interior as you read this.

Bulletproof Buckles (not to be confused with Rome’s new ‘Bombproof Buckles’) complete a very attractive package indeed. Oh, and in the famous words of Columbo, just one more thing… Bataleon include a few spare parts in the box – namely ladders and a couple of screws – so you won’t have to hunt around the shops in resort should you suffer any mishaps. Bravo, guys. If only more brands did this.

Trade Secrets

Rubby Kiebert – Sales Director, Bataleon

“The Bataleon binding project was born out of our desire to offer the full package to our fans and build a binding that worked better with 3BT. The Astros feature tempered, aerospace-grade aluminum wraps around both sides of the baseplate, giving riders instant power transfer to the heel edge without sacrificing lateral flex. Instead of relying entirely on your highback for heel edge turns, the wrap chassis system creates a point of leverage under your toes making it easier to get on edge and more stable. The Astro is tailored for more aggressive riders and was designed to be paired with our directional and directional twin performance boards like the Thunder and Goliath Plus.”
