For those who love to charge – whether on piste or off – we present the Salomon Speedway. Stiff and aggressive, this is for experienced riders looking for a spicy all-mountain freeride deck ready for full throttle top to bottoms, elbows down eurocarves, and big old pillow drops.

The directional tapered shape coupled with backseat camber keeps the board loaded up underneath that back foot for those deep days when you can grab your snorkel and really open up your turns floating through the pow. Transitioning into a flat profile up front to lift the nose as the body of the board is engaged, you’ve got a board that’s as open to aggressive slashes as it is surfy turns.

Salomon have really put an emphasis on keeping this board light whilst ensuring it doesn’t compromise performance. They’ve kitted out the tip and tail with a honeycomb blend for better floatation and control. This is touted to increase the dampening qualities by absorbing any shocks and soaking up chatter from cruddy conditions. You charge harder for longer, and save your legs in the process.

This board is one of the stiffest in Salomon’s range. However, thanks to a blend of elliptic curves in the sidewall, the Salomon Speedway turns effortlessly from edge to edge. Salomon have used their exclusive patented technology to give this board the perfect ratio of weight / power and dampening, which is great to hear if you like hiking for your lines. It has a combination of lightweight Paulownia and Popster Ghost Green Core adding stability and pop to the board whilst cutting precious grams.

Salomon have detuned the edges to a 1 degree bevel everywhere else on the board apart from between the feet, so you have edge hold where you need it whilst ensuring that there are no hang ups when you’re ripping. The clue is in the name with the Speedway, Salomon have kitted it out with their Sintered EG Base, engineered to retain wax, keeping you sliding faster for longer.

It’s only the Speedway’s third season but with such a solid lineup of response, control and speed, we certainly hope we will be seeing much more of this guy. Going all the way up to a stonking 170cm this is a certified ripper, if you’re a seasoned snowboarder looking for a downhill charger, The Salomon Speedway certainly fits the bill.

Tester’s Verdict 2019/20

Ed LeighPresenter/Commentator

“If you’re a freerider then you owe it to yourself to at least test this board, it is in my opinion a classic. We’re currently seeing a surge of alternative shapes, which is why the Speedway stood out to me because there is something classic, even old fashioned about the shape. A long nose and stubby tail linked by a narrow waist tell you that this board is all about turning.

“It also encourages you to draw out long arcs, but will happily flex and let you tighten them up with a snap”

The Speedway is nowhere near as stiff as the Sick Stick, Salomon’s other classic freeride offering. And where that is a no holds barred big mountain machine that needs to be manhandled, the Speedway has a lot more finesse. So it has a standard flex, but the key is that torsionally (how the board twists) the Speedway is quite stiff, which combined with the mellower flex means that you have a playful yet stable cruiser that floats from edge to edge.

I really, really enjoyed riding this board, it felt so smooth and fast between turns. I felt like my riding was really fluid on this board and it seemed to encourage me to play with turns. It also encourages you to draw out long arcs, but will happily flex and let you tighten them up with a snap. It’s probably the best flex pattern I’ve ever had on a board because it feels like you can always use the power it stores with its torsional stiffness to pop onto the other edge.

For freeriders looking for a gliding piste and powder machine look no further than this.”

Tester’s Verdict 2018/19

“The clue’s in the name. This fast-charging freeride snowboard is not for the mellow cruiser type.

“The Speedway is crying out to be pointed and ridden fast”

As soon as you get on the Speedway things start to happen that bit quicker. The Speedway is crying out to be pointed and ridden fast; its stiff and narrow design feeling super stable at speed. It gives you all the edge grip needed when railing it around at Mach One.

The Speedway is the perfect board for the rider who loves speed and control, is always pointing downhill, and is always on the edge.”
