New for season 20/21, Patagonia’s expanding their R1 Base Layer line with six more lightweight and environmentally friendly pieces for their R1 Air collection. The Patagonia R1 Air Zip-Neck base-layer, while we’re on the subject, is a fine example of what the new line has to offer.
Even if classed as a base layer, the R1 Air Zip-Neck works equally well used as a slim-fitted mid-layer or a second base-layer on top of a lightweight base layer.

Made out of fleece, a material more commonly used in the mid-layer game, the R1 Air is a breathable base layer with a quick-drying time. Thanks to its ability to retain heat and remove moisture it also offers comfort in terms of warmth. Even the most breathable base-layers will pick up a smell after a while. Luckily, Patagonia’s added a durable odour control to the R1 Air – leaving you smelling like roses for longer, even after a more strenuous day. Adding to the base-layer’s repertoire of features are the off-shoulder seams, that are placed under pack straps. This makes it that bit comfortable to wear over sustained lengths of time.
Known as a pioneer when it comes to sustainable manufacturing processes, to reduce the company’s carbon footprint Patagonia has used 100% recycled polyester to produce every product in their R1 Air collection, (including the R1 Air Zip-Neck). In addition to that, the products are Fair Trade Certified sewn, meaning they’ve been produced in factories with safe, and ethical, working conditions.
Available for both men and women, the Patagonia R1 Air Zip-Neck Base-Layer comes in five different colourways for both genders. There’s an added left-chest pocket on the men’s one.
