Does CBD Have A Place In Snowboarding?

“Forward motion make you sway like the ocean, the herb is more than just a powerful potion”

Many of us know the simple pleasure of sitting at the top of the park on a sunny day with a can of cheap beer and a joint. Getting 420 blazed with your homeboys before strapping in to go chomping sidehits is one of the best ways you can spend a day on the hill. Smoking weed and snowboarding have seemingly gone hand in hand since the beginning.

DISCLAIMER: We at Whitelines aren’t promoting the smoking of the devil’s lettuce in any way shape or form, if anyone comes up to us offering some of the ciggaweed we shout, “bugger off you bong blazer!”

“It cemented the idea that snowboarders are all hemp loving hippie wastoids”

Snowboarding was skyrocketed out of its subculture and onto the world stage at the Olympics in Nagano in 1998. The first ever gold medallist, Ross Rebagliati, tested positive for the old icky sticky and was consequently stripped of his medal. It was eventually given back, but it cemented the idea that snowboarders are all hemp loving hippie wastoids. “And furthermore Susan, I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised to learn that all four of them habitually smoke marijuana cigarettes…reefers.

Trends come and go in snowboarding all the time, like those haggard denim style snowboard pants that gained popularity in the early 2000’s (thanks a lot Shaun White). One of the current trends is cannabidiol (CBD). Scroll down your Instagram feed long enough and you’ll come across an athlete promoting a CBD brand or harking on about the benefits of it.

“CBD is a different compound and its uses are more of the holistic health kind”

We’re not doctor nerds or science geeks, so we won’t try and school you on the intricate technicalities of it all. In layman’s terms there are more than 100 cannabinoids found in cannabis and THC is one of them. It’s the psychoactive little bugger found in rock ‘n roll tobacco that gets you stoned. CBD is a different compound and its uses are more of the holistic health kind.

While cannabis itself is still largely illegal, and THC remains on the list, the World Anti-Doping Agency removed CBD from its list of banned substances as of 2018. The laws surrounding CBD and its consumption and sale are in constant flux and vary depending on where you are round the world. So before partaking make sure you research the specific laws in your country.

“To date, there is no evidence of public health related problems associated with the use of pure CBD.”

It’s important to remember that because of the fairly new status of CBD into the mainstream and the complex legalities surrounding it, there isn’t a lot of concrete evidence from studies involving humans. However, a World Health Organization report states “To date, there is no evidence of public health related problems associated with the use of pure CBD.”

Snowboarding is a rigorous physical activity and shredding day after day can really put your body through the ringer. You’d be hard pressed to find a snowboarder who hasn’t suffered at least one injury. CBD has been known to alleviate pain and reduce inflammation, so if you’ve had a meaty slam then a lil CBD could start setting you right. It’s even been touted to enhance relaxation to act as a sleep aid to help recovery. For those who choose to eschew over the counter pain management and the side effects associated with chemical NSAIDS, CBD could be the more ‘natural’ solution you’ve been looking for.

“If you buy your CBD off the same guy, you’re probably gonna end up with a vial of distilled beaver urine”

There’s a bunch of different ways you can take CBD from vaping and edibles to creams and tinctures (we recently tried the Pax 3 Vaporizer and got on well with it). You can even put some Alanis Morrissette on your stereo box and sink down into your tub with a soothing CBD bath bomb if that tickles your pickle.

Like with anything you’re putting into your body you have to be careful about what you’re buying- research the company. If you’re buying weed off a guy on a street corner wearing a Sergio Tacchini tracksuit and a No Fear snapback, you’re probably gonna end up with a bag of oregano. If you buy your CBD off the same guy, you’re probably gonna end up with a vial of distilled beaver urine.

Despite the convoluted legalities surrounding CBD, it’s an industry that’s booming, it’s no longer an illicit topic relegated to dark web internet forums. We can, facts and studies allowing, genuinely see it becoming the next big thing in legitimate pain management. A topic like this is bound to divide opinion, are you a die-hard CBD fan or are you vehemently anti Mary Jane? Drop us a message and let us know your thoughts.
