BRITS 2019 Day 1 Roundup

Day 1 of the British Championships in Laax

Allow us to set the scene- It’s a beautiful Tuesday, the birds are tweeting, the sun is shining and the war cries of grown men fill the air. It’s snowboardcross day at the Brits. Day 1 has seen a bunch of medals, a couple of hectic goggle burns, a skinful of beer and a handful of hospital trips. We’re out for the British Championships here in Laax, often called the freestyle capital of the world, and it’s easy to see why. The freestyle mecca is the perfect location for the event, they have a world class superpipe (the largest in Europe), an incredible talented shaper crew and the ability to host a spectacular kicker comp.

Despite the wind picking up all the competitors were in high spirits and were set to throw down the gauntlet. Possibly the most highly contested podium of the entire week is the Masters snowboardcross- and it didn’t disappoint. The Masters category is open to all those over the age of 30, and years of experience and grudges were present in the pen. Danny Chambers put down a stonking run in the final and walked away with the Gold medal and Lesley McKenna put in a speedy final run to swoop the gold in the Masters Womens category.

For the honour of being called the overall British Champion the gents left everything at the start line and went to town as soon as the gates opened. Blood and tears were shed a plenty and after a few wobbles and pushes eventually the birthday boy himself Billy Morgan was able to keep his laser focus and nab the win.

PC: Motion Stoppers | U12 podium

The overall womens title was won easily by GB up and comer Maisie Hill who’s got her sights set on the slopestyle comp at the end of the week. Little ripper Mia Brookes managed to sail away with the U12 victory, chucking in the second fastest time of the day.

The course was shaped to perfection, and it left the competitors with little to worry about, except their rivals. It was a super fun day up the hill in Laax, and with Big Air, Slopestyle and Halfpipe still to come there’s gonna be a lot more medals, booze and blood on the cards.
