As well as Jérôme Tanon’s incredible three-year project The Eternal Beauty of Snowboarding, The House of Vans recent double bill saw the premiere of this new film starring local favourite Sparrow Knox and his French brother-from-another-mother Niels Schack.
Like Tanon’s film, it ditches seriousness in favour of feel-good vibes as we follow this odd couple on the oddest of shred adventures across asia. Conceived out of the desire to return to their roots (Sparrow is the North London urchin with Indian roots, while Niels learnt how to ride in the mountains of northern Iran) Loose Change takes in the mountains of Turkey, India, Kazkahstan and Japan, with the stoner duo joined along the way by heavy hitters Victor Daviet and Louis-Felix Paradis.
There are some really flowing urban lines throughout, and an overall feel that’s more skate flick than traditional shred film (helped in no small part by some sick animation by UK rider/skater/artist Tom Guilmard). The spots are sketchy, the conditions a gamble, but with two such positive characters leading the charge this movie is a lesson in the fun to be had from saying ‘yes’, meeting new friends and simply improvising with what you have. Keep an eye out for one of the worst arse slams ever caught on film (technically a double arse slam!) and a hitch-hiking goat…
Directed by Niels Schack / Filmed by Alex Weir / Animation by Tom Guilmard
