Jake Blauvelt scored epic conditions in Chile a couple years back. Here’s to more this season…
While we’ve often waxed lyrical about the heavenly glory that is summer glacier snowboarding in Europe, June is the time of year when winter starts kicking in in the southern hemisphere.
The main hotspots for scoring when the northern hemi is sweltering through the baked months of summer – places that have bonafide resorts with lifts and parks – are in Chile, Argentina, Australia and New Zealand. Of course, more adventure-boarding types might also want to check out South Africa, Peru or even sniff out somewhere like Madagascar. There’s also Antarctica, of course, but you’d need to have De Le Rue levels of experience, backing and madness to even think of attempting that one – not to mention even Xavier and his ilk wouldn’t want to head there in the depths of an Antarctic mid-winter…
So when it comes to spots to shred, us northern hemi dwellers certainly came up trumps. But, though it’s been short-changed by the geographical alpine landmass lottery, there’s still plenty of terrain below Mother Earth’s waistline to get busy on. Now that it’s June the big storms have begun to hit, depositing the White Spuff of the Gods on the mountains down there, we decided to fuel your stoke by presenting some spots that have already been getting some – book your long-haul flights, and get some faceshots in ya!
