The Best Southern Hemisphere Resorts Right Now

Winter's beginning to fire south of the equator...

Jake Blauvelt scored epic conditions in Chile a couple years back. Here’s to more this season…

While we’ve often waxed lyrical about the heavenly glory that is summer glacier snowboarding in Europe, June is the time of year when winter starts kicking in in the southern hemisphere.

The main hotspots for scoring when the northern hemi is sweltering through the baked months of summer – places that have bonafide resorts with lifts and parks – are in Chile, Argentina, Australia and New Zealand. Of course, more adventure-boarding types might also want to check out South Africa, Peru or even sniff out somewhere like Madagascar. There’s also Antarctica, of course, but you’d need to have De Le Rue levels of experience, backing and madness to even think of attempting that one – not to mention even Xavier and his ilk wouldn’t want to head there in the depths of an Antarctic mid-winter…

So when it comes to spots to shred, us northern hemi dwellers certainly came up trumps. But, though it’s been short-changed by the geographical alpine landmass lottery, there’s still plenty of terrain below Mother Earth’s waistline to get busy on. Now that it’s June the big storms have begun to hit, depositing the White Spuff of the Gods on the mountains down there, we decided to fuel your stoke by presenting some spots that have already been getting some – book your long-haul flights, and get some faceshots in ya!

Chile

@elcoloradofare @monsterenergy @cervezaroyalguard @dc_shoes_chile @slashsnow @nowbindings ???? @cfaziom ????

Valle Nevado – perhaps the best-known resort in Chile, located a stone’s throw from the capital city of Santiago – has just gotten three feet of new snow and announced it’ll be opening this weekend. Slash rider Manuel Diaz recently dropped this ‘gram the other day from neighbouring El Colorado, just over the peak from Valle Nevado, which has already opened its doors. Though there’s clearly plenty of new snow, he also pointed out that it’s super sharky so stay safe, yo. The nearby resort of Portillo is also looking loaded, and set to open the following weekend.

Las Leñas, one of the better-known Argentinian resorts, also got dumped on by the first storm of the South American season, and is gearing up to open its lifts this weekend. Cerro Catedral, near the town of Bariloche, is further south and though it doesn’t seem to have born the full brunt of last week’s weather system, thanks to cold temperatures, some recent snowfall and snowmaking, they’re set to open some slopes this weekend, with the full shebang scheduled to be good to go at the end of June.

New Zealand

Day 1 with the crew was pretty damn nice ???? @macwaddington / @burtonsnowboards

Kiwis could rejoice as Mt Hutt fired up its lifts for another winter of NZ shred last weekend. Carlos Garcia Knight – one of the standout riders from last season’s Winter Olympics in Korea – was there and seems to have had a good ‘un by the looks of this perfectly tweaked Method. The Remarkables are also up and running, while Treble Cone, close to the town of Wanaka, is almost prepped to welcome riders to their inclines and are set to open next weekend.

Australia

We’re opening this weekend!⚡️'STORMIN NORMAN’ is forecast to bring 50cm+ ???? #StorminNorman

The Aussies get in on the storming start to the southern hemi season, thanks to a storm called Norman. Thredbo is expected to get over 50cm of white gold over the next few days and thus plan to open this weekend. Stormin’ Norman is also predicted to hit nearby Perisher, which has already opened it’s doors for the 2018 winter, and Falls Creek – which used to play host to the much-missed Stylewars contest – is also looking like it’s getting some.
