Let’s be real for a moment. Given the choice, we’d probably all pick a soft, powdery landing over a bulletproof one in the park. The problem? Nobody wants to ride a park deck in the backcountry. The solution? The Slash Brainstorm. Gigi’s brainchild of a snowboard that delivers in equal measure on freestyle performance and backcountry prowess.

Who Is The Slash Brainstorm For?

Probably the generalists more than the purists out there. Slash cater specifically to park riders with boards like the Spectrum, and freeriders with options like the Straight and Portal, but the Brainstorm bridges the gap between freestyle and backcountry and, as a result, it makes a for a pretty decent all-mountain quiver of one.

Shape, Profile and Sidecut

The freeride credentials come in the form of setback stance and camber, with a longer rocker profile in the nose to keep you afloat in the backcountry. However, unlike many powder specific shapes, there’s no taper between the nose and tail. This increases the Brainstorm’s performance in switch and the more balanced geometry shares some similarities with a true twin.

The construction obviously favours riding in your preferred direction, but there is still a touch of rocker in the tail. Not as much as you’ll find at the front end, but enough to prevent a tomahawk as soon as you switch things up.

It’s not all about powder though (as much as we wish it was) and the Brainstorm has equipped each sidecut with what Slash are calling Ultimate Traction. Essentially, there’s a small disruption in the edge, directly in between the rider’s feet. Nothing like the crazy wavy lines on some other brand’s model out there, but enough to provide an additional contact point in the centre of the board to have you railing your carves on hardpack and holding your line when you encounter a patch of ice.

Construction and Materials

The price point might almost send out the wrong message about the Brainstorm’s construction, but Slash tend to pack a lot of tech into their boards with incredible value for money. The core is constructed with four different wood species — paulownia, spruce, beech and popular — configured strategically to shave off unnecessary weight, reinforce the key stress areas, and deliver on a lively and dynamic flex.

That’s then sandwiched between a combination of triax and biax fiberglass layers which strike the sweet spot of torsional response and reactivity, with a more forgiving and manageable flex at lower speeds.

The Landing Strip additives of carbon and Kevlar run from the inserts out to the nose and tail and serve a dual purpose of bolstering up the power at the ends of the board to hold up under increased forces and dampen out the high speed vibrations.

Roundup

There’s a reason the Brainstorm remains one of the best selling models in Slash’s line. As much as a locker full of snowboards to suit every condition will appeal to most riders out there, the reality is that what we often need is one board to tick the vast majority of boxes. If you’re scoring fresh tracks on the first lift, carving up groomers and taking a few hot laps through the park all before your first coffee break, the Brainstorm is exactly the kind of snowboard you’ll want under your feet.
