Why we chose the Salomon HPS Louif Paradis Snowboard: Proof that not all powder boards have to be pointy.

Wolle Nyvelt’s Hillside Project Series has been one of our favourite collections since it first dropped a few years ago. There aren’t many out there who know more about shaping than he does, so he’s worked with some of the Salomon team’s brightest stars to create some classic powder-hungry vehicles that knock gimmicky shapes into a cocked hat.

After giving the HPS treatment to Annie Boulanger and Takaharu Nakai, this year the honour goes to Louif Paradis. Once arguably the most accomplished rail rider of his generation, he’s since transitioned gracefully into a freerider extraordinaire – and the Salomon HPS Louis Paradis reflects that.

Who Is The Salomon HPS Louif Paradis For?

Not ready to give up freestyle but looking towards a powder-filled future? With this stunner, you really can have it all. Granted, it’s far from a park board, let alone a rail slayer, but when you want to pull shapes on a powder-less day, it’ll do nicely.

Shape, Profile and Sidecut

Salomon’s a brand that likes to get techy with its profiles, and the one on the Salomon HPS Louif Paradis is divided into seven sections. What you’ve essentially got, though, is a ‘camber between the feet, rocker at each end’ configuration, which offers plenty of pop with more margin for error (and opportunities for a butter session) than any classic camber.

No matter which size you go for, the nose is half a centimetre wider than the tail. It’s subtle, but effective when you’re railing a turn on hard-pack or trying to stay on top of things in the powder. Can you still ride it (or land it) switch? Of course. As for the sidecut itself, it’s Salomon’s proprietary blend of straight sections and specially-positioned curves that holds an edge like no-one’s business.

Construction and Materials

Given the HPS range’s premium feel, it’s no surprise to see plenty of Salomon’s top tech at work here. The ‘Ghost Green Core’ is – as the name suggests – made from sustainable wood, whilst also being ridiculously light. Additional ollie ease comes from the varying thicknesses of wood along the length of the profile.

That’ll come in useful when you’re scratching your freestyle itch, while the cork dampening will keep your feet happy when things get a bit too chattery at high speed – something you’ll have no problem experiencing thanks to Salomon’s ‘Sintered EG’ base, which for our money remains among the fastest you’ll find right out of the wrapper.

So all angles are covered, then; and in a segway worthy of The One Show, that brings us neatly onto the edge-tuning, which is sharpest at the contact points and mellowed off elsewhere for a ride that’s precise when you want it to be, but forgiving elsewhere.

Roundup

If we’re honest, we’ll take out a deck from the HPS range as often as Wolle can design them. The time is definitely right, however, for a more freestyle-focused model to grace the range, and there are few riders who epitomise true all-round chops like Louif. For anyone that liked the look of the previous models in the line, but were holding out for something just a little more versatile, welcome to Paradis.
