Why we chose the Jones Youth Flagship Snowboard: Because, let’s face it, your kid’s already better than you. Give them the board they deserve.

Once they’ve got the basics of snowboarding down, kids tend to gravitate to the boom-gnarly-stunt-trick promise of the park. However, there is a better way. While others take the very first opportunity to ominously skid towards a rail, a freeride-specific stick like the Jones Youth Flagship could help your young charge discover what a turn is actually supposed to feel like – and amen to that.

Who Is The Jones Youth Flagship For?

Forget the warm, generously-filtered glow of parental love for a second, and ask yourself: does your kid rip? As in, do they objectively slay the mountain in a way that simultaneously makes your heart swell with pride, and your stomach turn at the thought of your own wasted youth not spent honing your shred skills? If so, you’re in the right place.

Shape, Profile and Sidecut

The jury’s out on what shape and profile are best suited for a learner kid (a true twin flat base seems to be the most popular option). However, that’s not what the Jones Youth Flagship is for. The directional, slightly-tapered shape of this one is so freeride friendly it should come with its own mini ice axe. The elongated rocker nose floats like a blob of ice cream in a pint of Coke, with enough camber present for carving up hard-pack too. The nose and tail aren’t quite as convex as they are on the grown-up versions, but the discerning grom will nevertheless appreciate it in every turn.

Construction and Materials

It’s only natural for a kids’ version of a board to lag behind its adult counterpart in terms of tech, and that’s the case with the Jones Youth Flagship. That being said, what you get here is still light years ahead of most grom-specific models. There’s also a welcome absence of clever-yet expensive features that the ankle-biters don’t even need.

Gone is the fancy core, the triax glass, the basalt stringers and the wood veneer topsheet. It’s still got a wicked-fast sintered base, though, as well as lots of Jones’ signature brand of eco-friendly materials.

“If your kid gets to grips with the Jones Youth Flagship, you’ll have to figure out how to keep up”

Roundup

Even with a relatively jazzy topsheet (at least compared to the none-more-wood adult Flagship), this junior freeride board might be a hard sell. It’s one worth persevering with, though. If your kid gets to grips with the Jones Youth Flagship, you’ll have to figure out how to keep up.
