Wait, what? A Surfer for kids? That is beyond sick. It’s also beyond sickening: Bataleon are truly spoiling the next generation! It’s a genius idea, though, because aside from looking super cool under the arm of your tween, this extreme swallow shape with its 3D nose will make teaching them to ride powder way easier. In fact to be honest, it probably won’t be long until they’re schooling you.

Who Is The Bataleon Surfer Mini For?

Boys and girls that are chomping at the bit to explore beyond the park. There’s only one length available (138) so we’re talking older kids in a weight range of approximately 45-60 kilos.

Shape, Profile and Sidecut

The Surfer Mini enjoys the same stunning outline as the award-winning adult version. It’s a directional design with a huge nose, a set back stance and a proper swallow tail. There’s a lot of 3D shaping going on here, too – particularly at the front, which features an aggressive amount of uplift on each side plus SideKicks to maximise the hull-like effect at the wide points.

Together with the extra width, this all makes the nose float naturally in deep snow, while the tail sinks of its own accord. Your kid won’t have to lean back or experience leg burn, even if their first turns in the sidecountry are only slow. Crucially, the swallow tail also makes the most of the available running length, so the board has plenty of edge to engage when they’re back on the groomers. In fact the Surfer Mini is awesome for doing proper carves, just like those old farts on dad’s insta feed.

As with all Bataleon’s, the side profile is traditional camber, with no rocker at all since the Triple Base does the job of reducing edge catches. Like we say, it’s a bonafide carving machine in a pint-sized form.

Construction and Materials

It might not be made for the park, but the Surfer Mini has a mellow flex that kids will find easy to control, dialled in via a straightforward poplar/beech core with biax glassing in the topsheet. Urethane sidewalls, aka Shock Walls, dampen the ride a little and are more scratch resistant. This is quite different to the construction on the adult version, which has a lighter core and a bunch of carbon to stiffen things up.

Likewise, the base on the Surfer Mini is extruded (it’s sintered on the regular Surfer) to keep the price down and stop them running away from you too fast.

“The brand new Surfer Mini might just be the coolest kids’ board on the market”

The brand new Surfer Mini might just be the coolest kids’ board on the market. But it’s about more than looking cute; it’s about encouraging groms to ride the whole mountain and learn the art of turning. Just imagine where that might lead by the time the lucky brats come of age…
