Record Store Day celebrations set the theme for this month’s Every Third Thursday – and Dave Lee’s paying tribute to the re-growth of the classic format by grabbing a whole bunch of Vinyl from Rainbow Records’ recycling facility – and getting to work on crafting them into a new beast altogether.
An unlikely repurposing – we wouldn’t be the first to take the fragile discs that usually grace turntables and make a snowboard – but that’s the whole idea behind Signal’s series, and in fairness, their efforts aren’t without reward.
The new deck – comprised of two layers of records, resin, and two sheets of fibreglass – rips pretty well for a board without edges. Signal shred Alex Cato describes it as ‘like riding playdough’ – but still gets a good chance to put in some moves on the slushly slopes before it packs in altogether. Much like the material that it’s cut from – the ETT Vinyl snowboard is tougher than it looks…
