Optimistic? was one of the most important movies of the decade for a plethora of reasons, and one of the biggest was MFM. Marc Frank Montoya was an OG style king of the early 2000’s. His unflappable style paired with his penchant for going HUGE singled him out and cemented him as one of the biggest stars of the time. Riding powder in a vest, lofty backcountry sessions and of course, the whole spraying kook scenario are some of his Optimistic? highlights. Looking up and seeing MFM gunning towards you with his G’d up super wide stance and baggy pants only to suddenly be engulfed in a white wave of snow must have been the most surreal experience. You also cannot watch his section without developing a longstanding love affair with the elusive nollie.
“Seeing MFM gunning towards you with his G’d up super wide stance and baggy pants only to suddenly be engulfed in a white wave of snow”
Not to forget a young Danny Davis going all out and making a name for himself, Wolle Nyvelt painting lines and crushing spines, tree bonking with Marco Feichtner, and of course hats off to Mikey Leblanc for making a toboggan the most sought-after snowboard of 2007. Annie Boulanger comes out swinging with one of the heaviest female parts to date. She changes the perception of women’s big mountain riding and blazed a trail for others to follow in her wake. Absinthe use this opportunity to question the future of snowboarding, and the planet, and give us every reason to be optimistic.
