Jamie Nicholls and Billy Morgan Win Big In Europe

Katie Ormerod and Aimee Fuller also make the podium

We’re well into March now, but the contest circuit (or circuits, rather) keeps on trucking – and the UK’s best riders are getting wired in wherever they can.

Fresh from surgery to his ribs, Billy Morgan was among the Brit contingent that headed to Flachauwinkl for the Spring Battle video contest. Over the course of six days, riders attempted to film their best top-to-bottom park run – and it was Billy who took the win thanks to a stack of bangers including his trademark backside triple 1440 nosegrab. Not far behind was Jamie Nicholls, whose amazing flat spins earned him 4th place.

Katie Ormerod and Aimee Fuller joined in for the tail end of the week, coming straight from the WST World Championships in China and having only one day to put down their run. Despite the handicap both girls made it onto the podium, with Katie in 2nd and Aimee in 3rd behind winner Jess Rich.

From there it was straight over to the Czech Republic for a World Cup event. This one was part of the competing FIS tour, but also had its fair share of heavy hitters including Ryan Stassel, Eric Beauchemin, local hero Sarka Pancochova and newly crowned WST world champ Brandon Davis.

This time around it was Jamie who bagged the gold in the men’s event, joined in the medals by Billy in 3rd place. Katie took a second consecutive silver, finishing just behind Silvia Mittermueller.

For Britain’s top two male snowboarders, these were their most significant wins to date (Jamie, as it happens, is the first British male to win a FIS World Cup event ever). The podium places for Katie and Aimee, as well as some great runs from Rowan Coultas and Matt McCormick, give those looking for some more Olympic bling in 2018 a lot of reasons to be cheerful.

Congrats to the riders, not least for dealing with that punishing contest schedule
