British snowboarder Jamie Barrow has continued his quest to become the fastest snowboarder in the universe by setting the world indoor speed record.
Jamie famously broke the British speed record in April, hooning it down the Mont Fort speed track in Verbier at a blistering 151.60 kph.
Determined to take his love for speed indoors (he is from England after all, a country whose snowboarding is limited to fridges and drymat…), Jamie slapped on his recognisable Union Jack full face helmet and dropped in at Snow World in Holland.
Even though the slope is a whopping 520m long and the world’s longest indoors, (to put that into perspective, Chill Factore, the UK’s longest, is only 180m), Jamie had to precisely calculate when he should begin slamming on the brakes, as peeling him off the bottom wall of the slope wouldn’t have been pretty for anyone. Especially Jamie.
At his fastest point, the speed guns were reading 69.4 kph – not bad at all considering the dramatically short length of the slope compared to your typical alpine run…
Understandably Jamie was pretty stoked to have another record under his name, even if he was the first rider to make it official:
“I’m really happy with the result and the opportunity to both train and set another record. This has given me even more confidence to push my limits and hopefully set more speed records in the future”
“This has given me even more confidence to push my limits and hopefully set more speed records in the future.”
Jamie hopes his endeavours will spawn a new generation of snowboarders keen on the idea of going really fast in straight lines, adding:
“I hope this record will encourage others to attempt to beat it and go even faster. Without competition the sport wouldn’t be where it is at the moment.”
But with a limit on the the top speeds possible imposed by the pitch and length of the world’s indoor slopes, you do wonder where this record can go next. We’ve heard that the dome in Dubai has a black run in it…
