Epic snowboard stop motion animation

We clocked this a few days ago but got caught up in a media hurricane and didn’t get round to posting it until now – some little comp that Travis Rice put on apparently. It’s a shame because it’s bloody epic.

As most of you will know, stop motion animation is the art of taking a photo of a scene, moving something very slightly in that scene, taking another photo and repeating – until you have a series of shots that you can play really fast to create the illusion of motion. Some genius ones have appeared over the years on Youtube although this perhaps most closely resembles this classic skateboarding one.

It’s a wonderfully creative and engaging piece of film that apparently represents a whopping 246 hours of work. Sequence shots of the rider were taken by his brother and had to be individually cut out before being put into place on the various backgrounds and photographed one by one. Believe us when we tell you that it’s an incredibly tedious and fiddly process – we gave it a go ourselves with the intro for our snowboard reviews last year.

Let us know in the comments section below if you’ve tried making your own stop motion animations. We’d be hyped to see them if so!
