The Brits, Europe’s most established winter festival, will be celebrating its 20th anniversary in Laax, Switzerland this weekend. This epic winter festival plays host to The British Snowboard and Freeski Championships, as the UK’s top athletes fight it out in a variety of disciplines including slopestyle, skier cross and big air.
Staying true to the progressive nature of snow sports, this is an open competition giving the best of the underground the chance to shine in the limelight. By uniting kids, pros and Olympians, to participate in events backed by extreme sports giants such as Quiksilver and Animal, The Brits is a true staple of the winter snow sports calendar. Things have come a long way since its inaugural year at the Sheffield dry slope.
A true celebration of snow sports, Ski Sunday’s Ed Leigh said, “The Brits is Glastonbury meets the FA Cup on snow.” Not only will the UK’s top professional athletes be present to shred in the snow, the event will be hosting some of the best international live acts around, such as Brighton’s beat specialist Bonobo and the infectious funk of The Go Team!
This year the thousands of revellers flocking to Laax, will witness one of the most insane stunts ever to take place on snow, as Animal’s mountain bike freeride legend, Sam Pilgrim takes on the slopestyle course on his push bike. The 2008 Nissan Qashqai Champion will be charging the crowds with seemingly suicidal riding that will see him launch the massive snow kickers, at speeds of up to 40mph.
