Great news out of Colorado this morning, as we heard that Billy Morgan bagged the highest score in qualification at the Breckenridge Grand Prix slopestyle!
Billy’s no stranger to Breck, of course – he put down the first triple rodeo just up the road in Keystone back in 2011, and it was here where he stomped a triple cork in 2013. Both big moments, but maybe this could top them.
While it doesn’t affect the Southampton-based shredder’s prospects for Sochi as a) the event is to decide Team USA qualification only and b) he’s already met the criteria anyway, it’s still a majorly prestigious event featuring the cream of international riding talent. With Stale Sandbech qualifying in third and Shaun White in eighth, it is a Very Big Deal to see Billy at the top of the list.
He won’t be the only Brit on course today, with Jamie Nicholls coming through in eleventh (placing ahead of Torstein Horgmo, thirteenth). In the womens event, Jenny Jones qualified in an awesome fourth place, beating out the likes of X Games Europe winner Silje Norendal among others. Sadly Ben Kilner narrowly missed out on making the halfpipe cut, but overall it’s been a great event so far for Team GB.
We’ll be keeping an eye on the finals as they play out later today. In the meantime, why not send Billy (@billymorgan89), Jenny (@jennyjonessnow) and Jamie (@jamienichollsuk) your support with the hashtag #BackTheBrits?
The finals start at 1PM EST, which is 8PM UK Time tonight – sadly there’s no live stream but you can check the live scoring updates online here!
