Stop motion: the art of creating the illusion of motion by taking a photo of still life scene, moving something slightly in that scene, shooting it again and repeating until you end up with a sequence of images that you can play together really fast. The internet is full of some properly breathtaking examples, including this epic snowboard one that we stumbled upon a few months back.

Here’s an equally remarkable effort by British illustrator Jonny Lawrence. Shot entirely on a whiteboard with a bunch of marker pens, the video shows a battle between a street fighter style character and a giant hand monster, complete with matrix style sound effects, shockwaves and special moves. It’s so convincing that at times you forget that for every bit of movement, the character and everything it is affecting has to be redrawn.

The only thing we might have changed is to have the hand play dead for a while before executing an unsuspected index finger flick to the balls…
