Last year’s Nokia Rookie Award well and truly proved that it’s not just a glorified pat-on-the-back for a couple of kids.
Since taking home the five large on offer last year, Arielle Gold and Ayumu Hirano have since been propelled into the spotlight and left a huge gold-coated mark on the competition circuit this season. Arielle bossed the FIS Snowboarding World Championships and Burton European Open while Ayumu Hirano took gold at the Burton High Fives in New Zealand, silver at the X-Games, gold at the Burton European Open and was only bettered by Shaun White at the 2013 US Open. It really has been a remarkable season for the 16 and 14 year olds.
But who claimed the Nokia Rookie Award in 2013? And are the winners destined to reach a comparable level of greatness next year?
Only time will tell whether Darcy Sharpe and Brooke Voigt (slopestyle award winners) and Taylor Gold and Chloe Kim (halfpipe award winners) will be filling up the magazines, web blogs and film parts of next season but what is for certain is that they’re on the right track – based on last years choices, these are all names that you’d do well taking a mental note of.
Check out the edit from Nokia above which was conveniently (and rather remarkably we must admit) shot entirely on a Nokia Lumia 920.
