Red Bull are never short of ideas (or cash!) for events eh? Following on from the groundbreaking Red Bull Supernatural a few weeks ago, they’ve just announced a new biathlon concept that will be taking place on these very shores. Dubbed Red Bull 50/50, the competition hits Cairngorm in Scotland on Saturday 10th March, and will see skiers and snowboarders race down half the mountain on snow, in groups of 10, before switching to bikes for the rest of the descent. An accident waiting to happen? Quite possibly, if the annual Red Bull Home Run at the Brits is anything to go by. Fun? You betcha! Let’s not forget that Britain is a serious player in the mountain bike world these days, with a regular World Cup event at Fort William and a newly crowned downhill World Champion in Danny Hart, star of possibly the greatest piece of sports commentary ever. So in other words, the standard of riding across both p-tex and two wheels should be pretty high.
Registration is open now at redbull.com/5050. On 5th March, 100 competitors will be selected from the list to be part of the race. Here’s the official small-print:
· 100 registered competitors will be selected at random to compete in the qualifying round
· Final groups of ten will be selected by combining mountain bike and snowboard qualifying times
· Competitors must be aged 14 or over
· Registration closes on Monday 5th March 2012
· Location: Cairngorm Mountain, Cairngorm Mountain Ski Area, Aviemore PH22 1RB
· Time: Qualifying starts at 10:00/Main event 16:00
· Tickets: Free to spectators
