In March this year, an avalanche was set off in Colorado that left parts of a nearby road buried 20ft deep and destroyed a new piece of O’bellx avalanche mitigation technology. The two men involved are facing criminal charges and a staggering $168,000 bill for setting off the slide, but they’ve hit back at authorities.

They claim their Fourth and Fifth Amendment rights have been violated by the Colorado Avalanche Information Centre (CAIC) by sharing the footage that implicates them. “The Fourth Amendment to the US Constitution prohibits unreasonable search and seizure; the Fifth contains protection against self-incrimination.” GoPro footage that the two men submitted to the CAIC was eventually used as evidence in the case against them, but the accused’s legal team claim it should never have been handed over to the authorities in the first place.
