Some sad news began circulating the internet last night – surfer Andy Irons has died on his way home from an event in Puerto Rico. The 32-year-old Hawaiian and three time ASP world champion had been unwell on arrival and was forced to pull out of his heat. Transworld Surf reports that the illness was Dengue fever (a mosquito-borne virus):
Andy was so sick he was unable to board his flight from Dallas to Kauai, got a hotel room, and was found there dead leaving behind a pregnant wife, family, and world full of friends and fans.
Andy might not have been a snowboarder but he was a true legend of the boardsports world – coincidentally, we recently posted this video of him learning to shred powder with his buddy Travis Rice. Our thoughts go out to his family.
