As you’ll see, it’s not really an exact science. Depending on the angle of approach, the face of the line can rapidly start to drop away in no time at all, one moment you’re spot on for the drop point, and the next it’s a much longer way to fall than you’d hoped for. Ralph Backstrom also goes to show that judging your landing isn’t exactly a cakewalk.

When we caught Xavier back at the premier in November, he was quite clearly optimistic about the potential this kind of approach technique has – although apparently he’s not too hopeful about practical application for your everyday snowboarder, we’d imagine the insurance companies would have kittens the moment they saw this footage…
