Bode Merrill: arty-farty jib shot

http://vimeo.com/42928129

Here’s a beautiful shot of Bode Merrill warming up at a spot in Denver, Colorado. Filmed from an interesting vantage point with cars streaming past and set to a super mellow jam, this 48 second, one trick short definitely falls into the realm of the arty farty. But we dig it. It’s a massively refreshing change from the familiar tight shot, low angle perspective and we’d love to see more of this kind of creative shooting in a full length film.

Tanner Pendleton, Bonfire and Salomon filmer, gives a short explanation of the clip and describes why warm up session like this one are often his favourite parts of a session:

As soon as you know it’s going to work, your brain goes crazy. You’re thinking of what you know you can do, what you might be able to do, what you want to do—and what you don’t want to do. It’s really fun to watch someone as talented as Bode go through this process. He makes it look really easy and always ends up doing something insane.

Clips like this can re-ignite that age-old debate (stemming from skateboarding) about whether snowboarding is more of a sport, more of an artform or a delicate balance between the two. What do you make of this clip from an artistic and filming perspective? Could you watch an entire film of abstract, slightly more removed shots like this one or do you just want to see the bangers up close and gritty?
