Directional pow charger, or jibstick? Helmet or beanie? Earth colours or full-blown neon? Take any random sample of snowboarders, and you can expect their gear choices to cover the full spectrum. One thing, however, is all but guaranteed: the vast majority, or possibly even all of them, will be carrying a smartphone.
Whether it’s checking weather reports, filming a park session or arranging where to get your post-shred pint, smartphones have plenty of uses on the mountain - and given the increased probability of damage, taking steps to protect it is a wise choice.
The Lifeproof Fré iPhone 7 case is just the job for those who those who have picked up Apple’s latest handset. It’s built to withstand everything you might encounter on the mountain, and more.
As well protecting your phone from impacts - it can be dropped without damage from a height of up to 2 metres. It’ll keep the weather at bay, too; snow, rain and freezing temperatures are all taken care of. Even if you somehow drop it in water and leave it there for up to an hour, your phone will be safe and sound.
"It’s built to withstand everything you might encounter on the mountain, and more"
It’s easy to snap the case’s two halves together, then once you’ve closed the charger port cover you’re good to go. While removing the case can be done by hand, Lifeproof include a small plastic key with each model in order to make the process even easier.
Take care with the port cover, though; once clicked into position it does its job well, but pull it the wrong way and it may pop out. Once you’ve had a few goes it’s straightforward, and makes plugging in headphones or a charger quick and easy.
"A scratch-proof panel gives you full access to the screen, with all the touch sensitivity you could want"
A scratch-proof panel gives you full access to the screen, with all the touch sensitivity you could want. Lifeproof also make other cases without this feature, but for use in the snow it’s always best to take that extra precaution.
The Lifeproof Fré case is available for other models of iPhone, as well as iPad and Samsung Galaxy. Given that most people’s phone is now worth more than their snowboard, buying a case like this just makes sense.
