The Lib Tech Skate Banana really captured the imagination when it arrived in 2007, and kickstarted a renaissance for reverse camber boards. But is it right for you?
The three main benefits of rocker are extra float in powder, super-easy buttering, and the minimised chance of catching an edge on firmer snow. Of course, the trade-off is that edge hold isn’t as good as on a camber board, but Lib have compensated for that.
Rather than featuring an even bend, the profile of the Skate Banana has a prominent rocker section in the middle flanked by mild camber sections, so when you engage an edge you get a bit more purchase.
On top of that, the Lib Tech Skate Banana’s edges have a wavy design called Magne-Traction, with seven contact points on each sidecut that can grip even the slickest ice. The makings of an all-rounder, then – indeed, regardless of the conditions, or where you are on the hill, it’s unlikely you’ll ever feel at sea with this board.
Whether you’ve just hit a rail, frontflipped off a mogul or launched yourself down a pillow line, the Lib tech Skate Banana will leave you stoked.
“This has almost legendary status amongst snowboarders; people still come into our store determined to buy a Lib tech Skate Banana, because their best buddy has told them that is the only board they need.
To be honest, other manufacturers cottoned on to this whole new upside down tech pretty soon after, tweaked it and some may say improved it, so it’s never going to be anyone’s only choice.
Having said that, with the new price reduction for this year and the Magne-Traction offering unparalled edge hold, the Skate Banana is sure to remain the go-to board for legions of riders."
