The skis may have come first, but K2 have been in the snowboard game longer than most - since 1987, in fact. As they prepare to celebrate 30 years of standing sideways, they’ve released the aptly-named K2 Eighty Seven.
It’s another of K2’s shape experiments, and you can expect to ride this roughly 5cm shorter than your usual stick. The width makes up for the downsizing, so you get something that stays stable but lets you cut loose, especially in the trees.
If you like to channel your inner surfer every time you hit the powder, this is for you. Every aspect of its design aims for that feeling, where you can follow the natural lines and find your flow.
The mostly camber profile and layer of carbon means you can still get plenty of pop, so as well as the woods this is well suited to natural hits and spines. It’s slightly tapered, too, allowing the tail to sink down in the deep stuff and take the effort out of keeping the nose up.
It’s no ultra-stiff pow gun, so fall-line pointers won’t get on with it, but if you like something lightweight and nimble then the K2 Eighty Seven might be the one.
“They say go down 5cms or so... For me it was more like 10cm, but even then this was heaps of fun to ride in deep, deep pow.
"I was bailed out more than once by the flex in the nose, which kept me on top of things even at slower speeds."
I was bailed out more than once by the flex in the nose, which kept me on top of things even at slower speeds. As for nipping in and out of trees, it was perfect – no gap was too narrow, and it turned on a ten-pence piece.
It’s not my favourite board in K2’s Enjoyer series, but that’s not doing it down – they’ve made some seriously fun sticks, and they’re all good!"
