If you’ve never stepped on a super-stiff board and let it loose down a motorway groomer, upping the ante until your cheeks are rippling like you’ve just taken off in a Eurofighter, you haven’t lived. Go hunt down a Burton Custom X, and prepare to feel the G’s.
Given that price tag, you’d expect to find some premium materials at work in this one. The core (which you’ll only find in this and the Antler) combines specially selected wood with carbon for the ultimate combination of stiffness, strength and light weight. The base is as fast as they come, too.
Freestyle isn’t entirely off the table, although it’s only a select few that will truly make the most of the Burton Custom X in that department. Given how it holds a strong edge and delivers bucketloads of pop, it’s little wonder that so many Burton team riders opt for the Custom X in the halfpipe.
You can forget about low-speed, ground-level pissing about, though. If you’re wanting to keep those cards on the table, consider the Custom or the Custom Flying V. For serious speed-freaks, however, X marks the spot.
New for 2017 is the Burton Custom X Flying V, which substitutes the camber profile for a camber/rocker mix. Check it out here.
“When it comes to screaming down resort runs, the Burton Custom X is still hard to top. Eery inch of it is designed for speed. If you race for the first chair on the days when it HASN’T dumped, then this corduroy-devourer will feel like it’s built for you.

The fun stops and starts there though; despite the shape and flex that suggest ‘all-mountain’, it’s really only for charging and carving. Mix it up with the odd switch run and it won’t disappoint, but park any ambitions to turn the mountain into a playground.
If that sounds rubbish, don’t despair; just get the regular Custom instead!"
