Props – Rusty Toothbrush

Find out more about the crew from those who know them best

Everyone reckons that their mate is the best snowboarder going, the one who deserves all the coverage and accolades, so we decided to let those same folk have a go at explaining exactly why their hometown hero is the most deserving-est. Introducing: Props.

As part of our #RustyTakeover week with the Rusty Toothbrush crew we got some of their nearest and dearest to sit down and bash out why this band of misfits, snowboard gypsies and ragamuffins are held in such high regard by both those that know them personally and the snowboard community at large.

Introducing: Props

Jon Demortier

Team manager at DC Snowboarding

A couple of years back, at “Enjoy the Glacier” in Les 2 Alpes, France, I heard from a contact that there was an Aussie DC rider there for the weekend. That same day, I met up with Alex Stewart, turned out it was even worse than I had been told… He was a Kiwi! After an entire conversation with him, I left realizing I hadn’t understood half of what he had told me. Something about “yarns”, “frothers”, and “vegemite”. Go figure.

So who was this Alex, and his homies, Brad and Frau? One was a snowboarder that had been seasoning back to back to back to back (linking summers and winters together in both hemispheres). The second was an engineer formerly working on superyachts across the world that had made a drastic change of lifestyle, and the third was a mustached madman that seemed to have a knack for all things digital. What brought them together was the shared love for good times, good friends, and snowboarding.

With good vibes from the beginning, we started discussing new projects for that winter. They were overly stoked about any potential opportunity, and always approached projects with their unique, fun, sometimes wacky, yet professional vision. It was dope to see, from the brand end of the deal.

With an overabundance of images and edits dropping online constantly throughout the year, the Rusty Toothbrush boys always find an edge to keep things interesting. They keep the fun in snowboarding, never taking things too seriously. That’s really what it’s all about. When a RTB edit is about to drop, you know you’re always in for a treat.

Note to RTB: You boys owe me a beer for making it seem like you guys kill it, for the sake of this article…

Cheers homies!

Diaries Down Under rider and producer

Alex is a nice guy. A super nice guy. In fact, the whole Rusty Toothbrush gang are extremely nice, welcoming, hardworking beasts. They have talent, and never stop until the job is done.

The crew are willing to go wayyyy beyond the expected at all times. It is this attitude, combined with the desire to be creative in whatever they produce that has led Alex and his crew to be at the forefront of creative snowboarding edits right now. They’ve sacrificed a lot to make the episodes they’re so passionate about – one of those things being sleep. It isn’t uncommon for Alex to be up working on the final touches of an episode until 3 or 4am and then get up just a few hours later to throw himself at whatever creation they have to get wild on the next day.A crew that

A crew that punches well above its weight in every area of creative filmmaking, Rusty Toothbrush are pure, refreshing inspiration. And, most of all, their videos make you want to go shred!!

Troy Tanner

Southern-hemisphere Rusty Toothbrush rider

When people hear ‘Rusty Toothbrush’ the first question they ask is “how did you come up with the name?” The answer they get will always be different, depending on which member of the crew you ask. Over time the story has evolved into more elaborate and creative tales all with a little bit of truth and more importantly a personal touch from whichever narrator you might be talking to. Each time the story is told the realm of uncertainty in which Rusty Toothbrush operates is reinforced.

This unpredictability is what keeps everything we do fresh. From a four legged snowboarder to a snowboard boomerang, rugby on the snow to Brad Smith dressed as a sheep being chased around New Zealand. One thing you can be certain of is that you will have no idea what we’ll come up with next.

When people ask me ‘what is Rusty Toothbrush?’ I say it’s the definition of fun and good times.

It’s doing the thing you love most in the world with your best friends. I think what makes our videos so appealing is that they are so organically fun that everyone, snowboarder or not can relate to and enjoy.

The rest is bangers!

Julian “Jesus” Vaury

Manager of the DC Chalet in Meribel

I met the Rusty Toothbrush crew three winter seasons ago. Back then, they were just starting to make video edits for Les Deux Alpes resort, they were already super creative and with a unique style. With the marketing staff at DC Europe, we thought about organising a shooting session with them on the DC Park AREA 43 and also around the house. A lot of things are happening around the chalet so we thought that was quite normal to do so.

When I saw those crazy dudes arriving at the chalet, I thought ‘who the hell are those gypsies on snowboards?’, an old Italian car full of all kind of gear, from shovels to winches etc. But they seemed so keen on coming to see us  that I knew it was going to be cool.

Their filmer Fransesco spoke really good French, despite his Dali style moustache – or maybe because of it! Giacomo the Rastaman was really funny and had great style, and the two kiwis, Alex and Brad, were the joy of shredding and good vibe incarnated, and they all were already shoveling as they arrived!

We had some good laugh building this project, with epic nights around loads of Carlsberg beers (who’s a sponsor for the DC Chalet since day one) always filling up the fridge. We started exchanging some ideas on how this could work the best, and I think they all did a pretty good job: just check the Mess Up Meribel edits.

They are always very creative with their set-ups, their filming and always motivated to shoot, even when it’s 2am and freezing, though I must say the neighbours didn’t like them as much as I did…

Today, Rusty Toothbrush is a solid and recognisable crew, they are very dynamic and they have included some Frenchies in the group, with Victor Loron and Chazou who are now filming with them.

Just one advice before I go: don’t invite those guys for dinner: they eat industrial quantities of food, especially panini, and they also consume equal quantities of beer.
Have a great season all!

Jesus
