The Art of Skitching: cheesy Brain Farm-produced Mercedes commercial

Brain Farm: the name has become synonymous with sweeping heli scenics, the liberal use of slow motion at stoopid-frames-per-second and some of the most impressive snowboard clips the world has ever seen (even if you’re of the opinion that the movies were a little too Planet Earth/Red Bull heli-heavy you’ve got to admit that the riding shots themselves were pretty tidy). You’ve gotta remember though that ‘The Art of Flight’ and ‘That’s it That’s All’ are just two titles in an extensive list of projects that Curt Morgan and Brain Farm have worked on from Jackass, to motocross flicks and even weddings, and clearly Brain Farm aren’t afraid to explore a wide range of potential clients and revenue streams. And with such a diverse clientele, there’s no way that all of their work will appeal to everyone.

Take this Brain Farm produced Mercedes commercial brought to our attention by our regular mag contributor Ed Andrews for example. It’s like a slicker, slightly less over the top version of this Lotus ad featuring Dan Wakeham. To your average Joe who doesn’t snowboard, these shots of pro-rider Rob Kingwill skitching behind a Mercedes C350 Coupe would probably seem pretty rad: ‘woah, he’s getting towed by a car!’, ‘look how high he jumped with all of that speed!’ and so on and so forth. The thing is, to us actual snowboarders, the riding in this is relatively unremarkable and the car just seems massively out of place. Do Brain Farm really need to, excuse the pun, drag snowboarding into a production that has the sole purpose of shifting shiny 4WD cars? One of the comments under the video perhaps sums up our thoughts best: ‘What car wouldn’t pull a 150 lb man down a slope?’

Besides, with the amount of money that a new Mercedes would set you back you could easily pick up an old truck and a snowmobile and actually do some proper snowboarding…
