Snowboard life after 30 – Watch Tasankojen Herrat

http://mpora.com/videos/8GqOfQjtJ Ironically, while the snowboard industry often appears too obsessed with finding the ‘next big thing’, hooking up increasingly young riders, the average age of snowboarders is getting older. It’s now fairly common to see fathers and sons riding together, as the generation of snowboarders that grew up with the sport pass on their skills to the young guns. However, although riders might be getting older, that doesn’t meant they can’t rip it as well as any 15-year-old park rat. Seen any of Devun Walsh’s video parts recently? While only some of the riders in this film are superstars in their own right (Joni Makinen or Aleksi Vanninen anyone?) all of them share one very important thing in common with Mr Walsh – they are all over 30. We thought this was so rad that we’d have to share the film with you.

What’s also rad is that the movie was shot exclusively on lo-fi compact cameras and mobile phone cams. It’s been put together by Jari Salo, the Finnish artist best-known for designing Mr Makinen’s legendary Option pro-models, so it’s pretty high-grade stuff. More than anything, it proves that making a sweet snowboard film doesn’t take massive budgets, expensive cameras or exotic locations. It just takes a few friends, a bit of creativity, and a desire to shred.

Oh and the film’s name, Tasankojen Herrat, means ‘Lord of the Flatlands’ apparently. Which may be some kind of reference to the lack of mountains in Finland…
