Rome FIND Snowboarding – Aleutians

“That was probably the most bullshit I’ve ever done to get to snow” says Cody Booth at the start of this, the second of three episodes in Rome’s FIND series.

Snubbing the usual focal point of Haines, Cody teams up with Aspen Rain Weaver and Thomas Delfino for an altogether different Alaskan adventure – out west to the tiny town of King Cove. A local tells them that he’s “never seen anyone come here for fun” before. Sounds like the makings of a good trip, no?

The edit becomes a snowboard version of Planes, Trains and Automobiles, as the crew hops on boats and fight a losing battle to get some all-terrain buggies through a marshy stretch of field. Aspen is definitely the Del Griffith of the group, exerting boundless enthusiasm for everything from sleeping in a trapper’s cabin to jumping in ice-cold water.

When they finally to get to some snowboarding, it’s pretty desperate stuff at first. Plus there’s a lot of down time thanks to the typically Alaskan weather. It gives them a chance to practice their shooting, though, as there be grizzlies around. Their preparations lead to this fantastic exchange:

Thomas: “Are there a lot of bears?”

Gun shop owner: “Yes”

Thomas: “Are they nice?”

Gun shop owner: “No. They’re bears”

Luckily they all avoid getting eaten, and even manage to get a weather window.  The last day of the trip is bluebird, and it’s epic.

There’s one more episode of the FIND series to come – after Kazakhstan and this, where will the guys go next? Stay tuned to find out.
