X Games Oslo 2016 – Superpipe Finals Full Recap

Ayumu Hirano and Chloe Kim win X Games Oslo 2016 Superpipe Gold.

Under a crispy bluebird Norwegian sky the stage was set for Oslo’s first ever Games Superpipe final. As the sun began to set and the temperature dropped, the riders dropped in and turned things back up, throwing heaters for the crowd with every trick. The pipe was looking perfect, the music was blasting, the crowds were getting hyped and the riders put on a real show.

Young Chloe Kim took the gold for the women going way bigger than anyone else. Every single backside air on her first hit was an absolute monster, putting even some of the men to shame, she was sending it! Chloe broke some records tonight and became youngest athlete ever to win three back to back X Games gold medals. Trust us, it won’t be the last. She scored a near perfect 98.00 in her final run, throwing back-to-back 1080’s and a McTwist to finish, the highest ever score in an X Games Women’s Snowboard Superpipe. Kelly Clark proved that she throws down harder than most scoring an 82.33 in her final run of the night, adding yet another X Games medal to her collection. Arielle Gold took her amazing form from her Laax Open 2016 gold medal back to the podium once again, this time for the bronze with a final score of 82.00.

Following on from the women, the men rolled through the pipe with so much style that there can be no doubts that competitive halfpipe riding is firmly back on the map. All around jaws dropped, necks craned and cheers went up as Danny Davis, Iouri Podladtchikiv, Pat Burgener, Louie Vito, David Habluetzel, Ayumu Hirano, Chase Josey and Kent Callister soared into the darkening Oslo night sky.

Ayumu Hirano posted a first run score of 92.33, going on to top it out with 94.66 in his second run which had the only cab double cork 1440 of the night. His signature trick, the crippler Japan, followed by back to back 1080’s and that switch double flip to fakie was more than enough to win him the gold. Iouri Podladthikov sat in second place from his first run with an 88.00, claiming the silver medal with a frontside 9 tail, backside double cork 1260 and cab double cork 1080. Chase Josey was guaranteed a medal by the time he took his last run, but proved he was worthy by posting his highest score of the day, 85.66, with a massive double michalchuk, frontside double cork 1080 and switch double crippler in his run.
