Slush is a wonderful thing, in the right circumstances – and when it’s April, you'll find plenty of it in Laax. Unfortunately the soft snow wasn’t ideal for the first event of the British Championships 2016, and so the slopestyle had to scrap the final and instead take place as a ‘two runs, best run counts’ format.

On Colin Holden's 'Clipboard OF Power', one of Fin Brember's sponsors was down as '666'. So THAT'S why he's so good...

Luckily the visibility was good, and several of the UK’s finest riders had come to play. Billy Morgan and Katie Ormerod were among those on the start list, the former having put knee problems fully behind him with a win at Spring Battle. Not that his joints would get an easy time of it today, forced to absorb a hefty drop to flat at the bottom of the course that might have sent a lesser man back to the operating theatre.

Meanwhile Katie’s massive frontside and backside 360s were enough for 1st place in the women’s event, holding off the challenge from Fiona Reid, Cerys Allen, Sabrina Burnham and others.

With speed being an issue on the course, it was no surprise to see so many riders opting for a laid-out backflip in their routine – as well as Billy and Katie, we saw them from Matt McCormick, Ross Taylor, Glen Ironside and Ciaran Tucker, to name just a few. Rowan Coultas put down one of the finest examples, sandwiching it between a method over the roller and a backside double cork 1080 nosegrab to close out a solid first run that would surely be the one to beat.

Rowan Coultas: flippin' brilliant

Previous Brits champion Jamie Trinder went all out to catch him, but couldn't maintain his speed after a double backflip on his first run, and came unstuck on a frontside 7 off the toes during his second. Matt Corry fared better, linking cab 5, front 3 and back 7 on the kicker line.

Matt McCormick had a rough start to his first run, decking it after hitting some rutted slush in the landing of his first rail trick. He landed it on his next go (with a massive claim, much to the amusement of those still to drop) and stomped a backflip and a frontside 540 further down. It had all appeared to go Pete Tong once more on the final jump, but somehow he saved a ropey back 1 and lived to ride another day.

In the end Rowan’s first run score held up, giving him his first Brits title. Billy and Fin Bremner joined him on the podium, having both stuck massive underflips in their runs.

Anyone watching the grom categories would be assured that the future of British snowboarding is looking good. Several members of the Salty Roosters crew earned medals, and Mia Brookes bagged yet another win in the under 12s. We've said it before, we'll say it again: she'll be back as overall champion in a few years, and not that many either.

Did someone say #floatybackside180? Shithouse snow and vis here at #thebrits meant we were treated to a sweet ass show of slow and stylee spins for today's slopestyle @billymorgan89 @rowancoultas @ormerodkatie @finbremner #snowboarding #ukshred
