Torstein Horgmo 'Triple Cork' wins X Games Big Air

Torstein Horgmo gave the world the moment it had been waiting for by bringing his Triple Cork out in competition for the first time over the weekend, wowing the X Games crowd and claiming the gold medal in the process. After a nasty slam on his first attempt, Torstein got straight back up to the top, shook his head a couple of times and sent it. A switch backside 12 from Seb Toots and a cab double cork 12 from Sage Kostenburg earned them second and third places respectively.

But while it was obviously Torstein’s time, we’ve been watching this over and over again, and we’re not sure it’s as ground-breaking as ESPN would have you believe. Look at it closely – isn’t it basically just a triple backflip with a 180 thrown in on the first one? OK, so you could call this a triple cork 1260 (so not quite as impressive as the steezy triple cork 1440 he threw down in the now-famous video) or you could just call it a triple backflip 180… People are going to say we’re just joining the ranks of the ‘haters’ as they call ‘em over there, but seriously, we interviewed the guy last year, and we love Torstein. We just can’t help wondering if this is just a case of major network hype getting the better of the actual snowboarding on display… I mean the UK’s Billy Morgan has very nearly got a triple backflip down, where’s his invite to the X Games? Since we first posted this people on Facebook have pointed out that even Torstein himself has been calling it a ‘triple flip’ rather than a ‘triple cork’. Have people gone a bit triple cork crazy? Hit more to have your say and watch the 2nd and 3rd placed tricks…
