Snowmass definitely comes out on top in the freeriding stakes, and gets regular dollops of the powdery stuff to make the most of the place. If it’s testing steep tree runs you’re after – littered with drops and do-able cliffs – then don’t waste any time and head to Hanging Valley as soon as they open it; it is epic. If you like things a little more open then head right to the top of the mountain into the Cirque area. Lower down are plenty of opportunities to dip in and out of the trees in much mellower areas. [part title=’Aspen, USA’] At the top of ‘The Tram’, Jackson Hole’s iconic cable-car, visitors are greeted by a sign that reads: “Our mountain is like nothing you have skied before” warning them of the gnarliness of the terrain and ending with: “Give this special mountain the respect it demands!” While it’s not meant to put you off freeriding, it’s a reminder that you must be properly equipped and prepared to ride here. It also serves to flag up Jackson’s unique selling point. If you’re used to the Alps, the Rockies can sometimes seem surprisingly mellow when you first visit, but there’s no danger of that in Jackson!
