CAPiTA Ultrafear 2015-2016 Snowboard Review

Frighteningly good

TESTERS CHOICE – 10 Best Park Snowboards 2015/16

The Details:

This is the CAPiTA Ultrafear’s third year of production, after starting life as a team-only board. Last season it proved to be one of our favourites out of all that we tested, so we couldn’t wait to get our hands the latest version.

It’s still a freestyle board first and foremost, with a true twin shape and mid-to-soft flex. The profile is predominantly flat with rocker rises towards the nose and tail, which makes it versatile and catch-free when riding on the groomers. Its loose, skate-like feel means that it’s made for seat-of-your-pants spontaneity, with presses made easier by the base’s rocker sections.

It’s not designed for balls-out speed, but the sintered base will carry you as fast as you dare, and the addition of Kevlar this year only adds to its stability. Plus, should you find yourself with a lot of powder in which to play, the profile will deliver float even if your stance is centered.

However, that’s all by the by. If you get one of these, be sure to aim it at the park – it won’t hang up on rails and it’s stable enough to handle all but the most supermassive kickers.

TESTER’S VERDICT:
Ed Blomfield – Whitelines

“I had a lot of fun testing this last year so was keen to put the latest model through its paces. While not a whole lot has changed beyond the graphic, this time around conditions on the mountain were different and I did discover more about its limitations.

“If rails are your thing then the Ultrafear is tailor-made”

For pop, buttering and an all round lively feel the CAPiTA Ultrafear is still hard to beat – it’s plenty soft enough to press yet packs loads of rebound, making it easy to get creative in and around the piste and ideal for throwing about in the park.

If rails are your thing then again the Ultrafear is tailor-made, being highly maneuverable at low speed and fairly catch-free thanks to the rockered contact points.

Where this board fell down was on hard pack and ice; an early morning start saw me trying to keep up with a pack of fast riders down some steep, frozen pistes and I must admit this felt loose to the point of sketchiness – while the base is fast, the short length and lack of camber just isn’t conducive to reliable edge hold and high speed Eurocarves.

As soon as conditions softened up that skittish behaviour turned to playfulness. All in all then, this remains one of the most fun boards out there… so long as you don’t mind a lie in.” – Ed Blomfield
